ISO 45001 Support

ISO 45001 Support — Built to Survive an Audit

Monarch helps Ontario employers build, document, and maintain an ISO 45001 occupational health and safety management system — from the first gap assessment to certification audit preparation. We do not issue certificates; an accredited certification body does that.

Why It Matters

ISO 45001 and COR™ in Ontario

Ontario's Minister of Labour has directed IHSA to continue recognizing ISO 45001:2018 certification as equivalent to COR® 2020 under subsection 22.6(1) of the OHSA. That makes ISO 45001 a real alternative for employers whose clients, parent companies, or procurement systems already ask for an international standard. Larger and multi-site organizations often pursue ISO 45001 because it integrates with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in a single management system.

One system, several standards

ISO 45001 shares the high-level structure used by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, so policies, objectives, internal audits, and management reviews can be integrated instead of duplicated.

Client and procurement driven

Buyers with international operations, public sector frameworks, or parent-company requirements frequently ask for ISO 45001 evidence rather than a provincial certificate.

Audit discipline

The standard requires documented objectives, legal registers, competence records, and management review, which is exactly the evidence an Ontario inspector or COR auditor asks for.

The Standard

What an ISO 45001 System Actually Requires

Clauses 4-5

Context and leadership

Interested parties, scope of the system, worker consultation and participation, and a safety policy signed at the top of the organization.

Clauses 6-7

Planning, support and competence

Hazard identification, legal and other requirements, risk and opportunity actions, objectives, training, awareness, and communication.

Clause 8

Operational control

Controls for contractors, procurement, outsourcing, change management, emergency preparedness, and high-risk work activities.

Clause 9

Performance evaluation

Monitoring and measurement, internal audit, compliance evaluation, and documented management review with defined inputs and outputs.

Clause 10

Improvement

Incident and nonconformity handling, corrective action, and evidence that the system improves rather than simply exists.

Evidence

Documented information

Every clause needs records. Most failed audits are caused by missing evidence, not by missing intent, so we build the record trail first.

Process

How the Project Runs

  1. 01

    Gap assessment

We compare your current program to each clause and identify the evidence you already have versus what must be created.

  2. 02

    System build

We write or restructure the documentation, legal register, risk assessments, and objectives with your team, not for a template library.

  3. 03

    Implementation

We coach supervisors and workers through the new controls, communication requirements, and record keeping.

  4. 04

    Audit readiness

We run an internal audit, close the findings, and prepare your team for the certification body's stage 1 and stage 2 audits.

ISO 45001 Questions

Does Monarch issue ISO 45001 certification?

No. Certification is issued by an accredited certification body after an independent audit. Monarch builds and prepares the management system, runs internal audits, and supports you through the certification process.

Is ISO 45001 accepted instead of COR™ in Ontario?

Ontario's Minister of Labour has directed IHSA to continue recognizing ISO 45001:2018 certification as equivalent to COR® 2020. Contract-specific requirements can still vary, so confirm what each buyer asks for before choosing a path.

How long does an ISO 45001 project take?

It depends on the size of your operation and how much documented evidence already exists. Organizations starting from scratch usually need several months of system operation before a certification audit, because the auditor needs records showing the system has been running.

Can we run ISO 45001 and COR™ at the same time?

Yes, and it is usually the efficient choice. Both standards look for hazard assessment, legal compliance, training records, inspections, incident investigation, and management review. We map one set of documents to both sets of requirements.

Do you support multi-site and multi-province employers?

Yes. We support Ontario employers with multiple locations, and remote support is available for teams outside Eastern Ontario.
